Clare Laybourne: NHS by day, Taekwondo coach by evening, and one of the top Taekwondo referees in the World!

Clare started Taekwondo at the age of 14 and soon took to coaching and refereeing. Clare's family have always encouraged her and played a huge part in her journey. Clare stated, "As a family we live, eat and breathe Taekwondo and now I am following my dreams as a referee". Clare is now one of the top 50 referees in the world and is currently in the qualification stages to referee Taekwondo in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

On top of all of this last year, Clare set up Scorpion Taekwondo in Mexborough. Clare told us, "I really wanted to give back to the children and provide them with the opportunities that I have had, there was nothing like this in Mexborough". The club now has 15 regular children, from 5- 16, with most now competing against other clubs. All the children are working their way up the belts with some working towards black belt.

Family is still at the heart of Taekwondo for Clare and she coaches the club with support from her dad. Clare said, "The club gives children confidence and something to aim for, the children now have aspirations to compete at the highest levels when they get older. Taekwondo also helps children to stay healthy, mentally and physically, it can break down barriers and help calm children down. Mexborough Taekwondo is a family club".

Some of the children and parents coming to the sessions told us why they love coming to Scorpion Taekwondo:

"I love to learn new patterns and skills, I like to win competitions and I make new friends".

Another child said, "Taekwondo keeps me fit and healthy and I have lots of fun".

One of the parents of a child who attends the club stated, "He loves the club, it gets him out of the house and off his Xbox, he gets to learn self-defence and it has built his confidence. Clare is lovely she is a great coach and the club has a really nice environment".

Get Doncaster Moving wishes Clare good luck in her journey to potentially refereeing at Tokyo 2020.
