One of Doncaster's largest outdoor spaces, Town Field (also known locally as Town Fields) is great for walking the dog, playing some football or just enjoying the outdoors. Town Field is located in Wheatley, near to the centre of Doncaster. This July (2024), Town Field has been awarded Green Flag status, which recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces.
As a result of the feedback from our community engagement work, the following investments are being made to the site. If you are using a mobile phone, the information will be displayed underneath the map for ease of access.
Activities and Events
Town Field Community Group became a constituted group in 2023. This group of residents meet on a regular basis to discuss and develop all things Town Field and they have already been successful in hosting fantastic free events such as an event for National Play Day and Doncaster Kite Festival. Improved Access Points
An active travel route is being introduced alongside Town Field, linking Thorne Road and Bennetthorpe, helping to make Town Field a more accessible green space.
Solar Lighting
The most popular improvement to the site residents wanted was the introduction of solar lighting. In collaboration with the safer streets programme, this has been delivered to provide guiding paths across the major routes through inset solar lights.
New Footpaths
Changes to Town Field entrance points will improve access and make it a more welcoming space, better connecting Town Field with the surrounding area.
The naturalised grass land area is now part of a specific project in understanding the long-term impact in this type of area, with both soil temperature and carbon sequestration being recorded.
Signage and Park Interpretation
New signage with maps and notice boards will soon be introduced at entrance points. Interpretation panels will be introduced, informing visitors of the rich history of Town Field.
